WELCOME MESSAGE OF THE GOVERNOR OF THE REGION OF WESTERN GREECE, APOSTOLOS KATSIFARAS, IN THE 5TH INTERNATIONAL TOURISM EXHIBITION “ATHENS INTERNATIONAL TOURISM”
Four-seasons tourism, infrastructure that attracts and facilitates visitors, continuous promotion and exploitation of all elements that make up our tourist identity, from wine-gastronomic tourism and our cultural heritage to the emergence of poles of global interest, such as Ancient Olympia.
In a few words, this is the essence of the tourist policy that we are pursuing in the Region of Western Greece. All of our actions tend here. And because every policy is tested in practice and measured by its results, in recent years, Western Greece has made significant progress in three strands:
-First, to visitors’ flows increase. An increase absolutely measurable, not limited to a single season, but serving our goal for tourism of 365 days. For example, during the first half of 2018, travel receipts in Western Greece increased by 73%, whereas the number of overnight stays increased by 51%.
-Second, to the dynamic entry of Western Greece into the travel destinations proposed by European tourist organizations, a result of our persistent and systematic work in the field of tourist promotion.
-Third, to the upgrading infrastructure. And I am not just referring to the major road axes that have contributed to the visitors’ surge, which we expect to be intensified even more when “Olympia Odos” is completed – as a whole – reaching to Pyrgos, Kalo Nero and Tsakona. I also refer to infrastructures that are directly related to tourism development. In particular, we have recently decided to modernize the Kalavrita Ski Center and to upgrade the land zone in Katakolo port.
