Travel agencies were taken by surprise when the appearance of the large OTA's such as Booking, Expedia, Hotels.com, 20 years ago, and, later on, metasearch such as Kayak, Skyscanner, trivago and others swept over their markets leaving increasingly smaller shares for them!
The big majority of travel agents have been unable so far to compete with Internet giants and the most important reasons are high investment costs and the lack of know-how.
However, new trends appear that give space to Travel Agents! Various surveys show that for the first time in 20 years, there are slight increases in the clientele of travel agents! Oddly enough, part of the increase comes from the Millennials generation that is more familiar with technology than ever before!
Also, new technologies, such as the cloud, mobile and chat bots now offer the opportunity for agents to enter the field of online distribution at low costs, while e-distribution on b2b and b2c levels has become simpler, widening the agent’s arsenal!
